To find out if an apartment is legal, you need to file a Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) request with the Town Clerk's office. The application for public access to records is available in our Forms Center, FOIL Request, or can be obtained from the Town Clerk's Office. To report an illegal apartment, call the Office of Citizens Services at 3-1-1 or (631) 957-7474. Please try to have as much information as possible when calling, including:
- address of the house
- location of the apartment in the house
- number of tenants in the illegal apartment
- location of the apartment entrance

If you want to make a complaint about an illegal apartment, a certain amount of information is necessary to enable inspectors to take the appropriate action. Complainant information is requested so that inspectors have someone to contact in the case that more information about the situation is needed.
