[ARCHIVED] North Babylon Teen Honored with Heroism Award

Richard Kerr

Lindenhurst, NY – Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, and Councilman Terence McSweeney recently presented the Heroism Award, the Town’s highest honor to Richard Kerr, a 17-year-old resident of North Babylon, for his extraordinary bravery following a car accident this past April.

On that evening, Kerr was outside his home with his siblings when a loud crash drew his attention. Acting instinctively, Kerr ran toward the scene and found a car wrecked on a nearby lawn. Despite the danger and debris, he tirelessly worked to open the passenger door to assist the driver. His quick thinking allowed a bystander, who was a nurse, to check the driver’s pulse before paramedics arrived.

Richard's selfless actions, which left him with glass cuts on his hands, exemplify the courage and compassion that define true heroism. While the driver tragically did not survive his injuries, Richard's immediate response was critical in ensuring every possible effort was made to save a life.

Supervisor Rich Schaffer praised Richard's bravery, stating, "Richard Kerr's actions on that night were nothing short of heroic. In the face of an incredibly dangerous situation, he did not hesitate to help someone in need. His courage and selflessness are an inspiration to us all, and it is our honor to recognize him with this award."
